Angela Bofill's Health Problems Continue
In the late seventies R&B/jazz great Angela Bofill was one of GRP Records' original stars, and a few years later helped Clive Davis and his then-fledgling Arista Records label get off the ground.Angela, a gifted vocalist and songwriter who by the age of eighteen had already jammed with the likes of Cannonball Adderly, Herbie Hancock and Dizzy Gillespie, went on to a successful recording career as a solo artist, with "This Time I'll Be Sweeter", "I Try" and "Angel Of The Night" among her many hits. Between 1978 and 1984, Bofill had consistent success on the charts, with six albums making the R&B Top 40 (five of which made the Top 100 on the pop charts as well), including two that made the Top Ten. During this period, she also placed seven singles in the R&B Top 40, with "Too Tough" making the Top Ten.
I'm sad to report of Angela's recent health problems. In January 2006 she suffered a massive stroke, and just a year and a half later suffered a second one in July 2007. Regarding this latest setback, the response time fortunately was quick and she's now out of the danger zone and recovering, but still has no medical insurance. Various benefits staged over the past year have helped to raise nearly $50,000 to aid with medical costs, but much more is needed.
As posted on the official Angela Bofill Website: "The best way fansand friends can help is to buy a copy of Angela Bofill: Live From Manila." All proceeds from the album, which was released on Black Angel, will go directly to Angie to help cover expenses during this difficult time. I've uploaded highlights right here (this is her first live album ever), recorded in Manila in September 2004 and released in March 2006.
